HAIR CLUB is an ongoing research initiative on the multivalent topic of Hair in our wider culture. HAIR CLUB is made possible through the EAGER Grant for Research and Creative Collaboration at the Shapiro Center. HAIR CLUB was founded by three graduate students at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago: Suzanne Gold, Kelly Lloyd, and Michal Lynn Shumate. HAIR CLUB thanks the indomitable Terri Kapsalis for her guidance and support.
Suzanne Gold Bio
Suzanne Gold is currently pursuing an M.F.A. in Creative Writing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where her practices in fiction and poetry collide with visual work, art history, theory and ekphrasis. Prior to graduate school she held the position of Visitor Services Coordinator at Glenstone, a private collection of modern and contemporary art outside Washington, D.C.
Kelly Lloyd Bio
Kelly Lloyd is in her last year of a concurrent M.F.A. in Painting and M.A. in Visual & Critical Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Currently, Lloyd’s practice includes putting 2 to 3 objects next to one another, performative lecturing, painting environments and forming her writing into objects.
Michal Lynn Shumate Bio
Michal Lynn Shumate is an M.A. candidate in Visual and Critical Studies at SAIC. Her research and writing, based largely in contemporary fashion, began at the University of Chicago with her undergraduate thesis in Art History. She continues to write and lecture on the evolving practice and theory of fashion exhibition, historiography, and pedagogy.
Throughout the academic year 2014-2015, HAIR CLUB will be around to service all of your hair-related needs. This will be a collaborative space for sharing how the concept/s of Hair weave into issues of creative and social unrest, make material for art, live after death, tango with fashion, and stuff about how we all have it and if we don’t, not having it is a central aspect of how we move through the world. We want to hear your hair-brained tales, fight your hairy battles, unpack your hairy metaphors, sprinkle your hairy ashes all over the wider world called culture, and engage scientifically, empirically, experientially, philosophically in your hairy mysteries.
JOIN US ! As we delve deeper into this tangled topic that holds beauty in balance with disgust, and weakness in balance with strength, and life in balance with death. Because you’re worth it. HAIR CLUB.
